Bio

Maria José Rangel de Mesquita is an Associate Professor with Aggregation at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, where she received her doctorate and has held teaching positions with regents, among others, in the areas of European Union Law, Public International Law, International Human Rights Law and International Justice. She participated in colloquiums and conferences in Portugal and abroad, which resulted in several international publications. In Portugal she published several monographs and lessons, namely “O poder sancionatório da União e das Comunidades Europeias sobre os Estados-membros”, “A União Europeia após o Tratado de Lisboa”, “A actuação externa da União Europeia depois do Tratado de Lisboa”, “Contencioso da União Europeia e Justiça Internacional (Introdução e Justiça Internacional regional especializada em matéria de Direitos Humanos)”. She coordinates the Jean Monnet European Module «Fundamental Rights and Rule of law as European Values in a Global World After the Conference on the Future of Europe» (2022-2025) and, previously, coordinated the Jean Monnet European Module «European Union's External Action Role in a Global World” (2012-1015). She was a participating member and teacher at the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence at the University of Lisbon-Faculty of Law (2011-2014), having also participated in other Jean Monnet actions. She participated in the Project on Principles of European Tort Law – Public Liability (Institute for European Tort Law, 2010-2016), as well as in the Research Project “Damages for Violations of Human Rights. A Comparative Study of Domestic Legal Systems” (2015-2016), which culminated in the publication of international collective works. She was a member, among others, of the Board of Directors of AIDA-Portugal, the Board of Directors of the European Institute for Traffic Law (IDEC-EITL) and the Board of Directors of AREP-University Institution of European Studies and AIDA-Portugal. She was an Advisor Judge at the Constitutional Court between July 2012 and October 2021.
