Summary

The project aims at promoting interest in EU fundamental rights and values in graduate and post graduate EU and non-EU students involved in EU studies and ofresearch papers and thesis in the subject-area of the Project and its four key-topics (as described below in 10). The project will encourage debate, critical analysis,and academic research under each of those key-topics.

It will also focus on educational work and dissemination of knowledge, within the EU and beyond itsborders, to promote awareness on EU fundamental rights and values among academia as well as non-specialized audiences of academia (fields other than law andpolitical sciences) and also beyond academia though the partnership with the Centre for Judiciary Studies and the Directorate-Geral for Justice Policy.

Objectives

Promoting excellence in teaching and research in a specific field of EU studies under national, European, and international perspectives; fostering dialogue betweenacademic world (law and other) and state level policymakers and civil servants, judges and other judicial actors, civil society, regarding four key topics: - Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law as EU values: evolving legal and jurisprudential framework in the EU and beyond the recovery in response to the Covid-19crisis and the Convention on the Future of Europe - Promoting the role of Fundamental Rights and Rule of law as EU values in national and international regional litigation - Promoting Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law as EU values in national public policies as a benchmark for 3rd countries public policies and legislation - Fundamental Rights and Rule of law as EU values in (re)new(ed) EU policies: migration and asylum package, digital and Artificial Intelligence, green deal, andexternal action.

The project is expected to pursue the line of teaching, debate and academic research that was developed at the Faculty of Law through several Jean MonnetProjects in the field of EU Law, namely on Fundamental Rights in European and Comparative Law (v.g. the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of the Faculty of Lawof the University of Lisbon on «The European Union after Lisbon, the cultural dialogue and globalization» (http://excelencia.campus.ul.pt), the Jean Monnet Module«Democracy, citizenship, and Fundamental Rights in European law and Comparative Law» (2010-2013) and the Jean Monnet Module “European Union ExternalAction Role in a Global World” (2012-2015) and the Jean Monnet Module “Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law as European values in a global world after theconference on the future of Europe” (2022-2025).

Relevance

Ao promover o interesse nos direitos fundamentais e valores da UE, com o objetivo de aumentar o número de estudantes universitários, da UE e de fora da UE, envolvidos em estudos sobre a União Europeia e na elaboração de artigos de investigação e dissertações nos quatro temas principais do projeto, este contribuirá para assegurar a interação entre as atividades de investigação do Centro de Investigação de Direito Público de Lisboa e as atividades desenvolvidas no âmbito do Módulo Jean Monnet em curso (2022-2025).
Em particular, o projeto integrará iniciativas que serão desenvolvidas na Universidade de Lisboa, na Faculdade de Letras, bem como no Centro de Estudos Judiciários (CEJ) e na Direção-Geral da Política de Justiça (DGPJ).
