Summary
The project aims to catalogue, archive and make digitally accessible all documentation of political and constitutional significance from the personal archive of Professor Jorge Miranda. This includes not only materials held in his personal collection, but also documents in the possession of third parties and in the archives of public and private institutions. The project seeks to promote the legal and political thought of one of Portugal's leading constitutional scholars and to document his contribution to the development of the foundations of the Third Portuguese Constitutional Republic.
Objectives
- Develop a systematic catalogue and presentation of the work of Professor Jorge Miranda, encompassing both his academic scholarship and his political contributions.
- Promote wider public access to Professor Jorge Miranda's legal thought and political legacy.
- Organise and preserve the archive in accordance with the principles of archival science and information and records management.
- Strengthen collaboration with the Faculty of Law Library in the organisation, preservation and enhancement of the project's collections.
- Enhance the Library's resources and digital platforms, making Professor Jorge Miranda's work more widely accessible to researchers and the public.
Relevance
Professor Jorge Miranda is a central figure in Portuguese constitutional and political thought and played a pivotal role in the development of the 1976 Constitution. It is therefore essential to systematically organise and make his work and public contributions available to the academic community in accordance with rigorous scholarly standards, encompassing not only his legal scholarship but also his civic and political engagement.
Beyond its academic value, the project also aims to make the thought and public service of one of the principal architects of the Constitution accessible to a wider audience. In doing so, it will contribute to a better understanding of the work of the Constituent Assembly and of Portugal's political life in the period immediately following the 25 April 1974 Revolution.
