Sustainable Immigration in a Welfare State by the Rule of Law

- FGV Headquarters Auditorium M F Thompson Motta

Event Description
FGV Justiça will be holding on 23rd September, the seminar "Sustainable Immigration in a Welfare State", at the headquarters of the Getulio Vargas Foundation.
The event is part of the permanent activities of the Lisbon Forum series.
The meeting will feature academics and experts to debate immigration processes in their entirety. The event is coordinated by Marcus Abraham, Judge of the Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region and Academic Coordinator of FGV Justiça, and Ana Rita Gil and Vladyslava Kaplina, professors at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and researchers at Lisbon Public Law.
Migratory movements in the 21st century involve a variety of causes, such as geopolitical conflicts, climate disasters, labour conditions and opportunities, fleeing violence and political ideologies. When choosing their destinations, various issues are taken into account, including those related to cultural and language affinity, leading to the intense flow of migration between Brazil and Portugal, for example. This makes it necessary to reflect on the measures needed for countries receiving immigrants to promote sustainable policies by the principles of the Social Rule of Law.
In this sense, based on the presentation of the results of the research embodied in the study "Public opinion on immigration in Portugal". Research project: Sustainable Immigration in the Welfare State of Law, carried out by researchers from the Lisbon Public Law Research Centre (LPL), the event aims to promote debate on:
(i) The challenges of sustainable immigration in a welfare state under the rule of law
(ii) the treatment of immigration within the framework of social security, which covers health, welfare and social security
(iii) humanitarian aspects of immigration, which include human rights and, specifically, racism and xenophobia
(iv) the regulatory framework dealing with immigration in Portugal and Brazil.
