Este livro discute a quest\u00e3o de saber se a interpreta\u00e7\u00e3o jur\u00eddica \u00e9 uma atividade cient\u00edfica. A depend\u00eancia do direito da linguagem, pelo menos para os fins habituais de comunica\u00e7\u00e3o, n\u00e3o s\u00f3 torna a interpreta\u00e7\u00e3o jur\u00eddica a principal tarefa desempenhada por aqueles cujo trabalho envolve o direito, mas tamb\u00e9m um passo inevit\u00e1vel. no processo de resolu\u00e7\u00e3o de um caso jur\u00eddico. Esta tarefa de descodificar as palavras e frases utilizadas pelas autoridades normativas na promulga\u00e7\u00e3o das normas, realizada em conformidade com os princ\u00edpios e regras da linguagem natural adoptada, est\u00e1 sujeita a todas as dificuldades decorrentes da incerteza intr\u00ednseca a todas as conven\u00e7\u00f5es lingu\u00edsticas. Neste contexto, procurar determinar se a interpreta\u00e7\u00e3o jur\u00eddica pode ser cient\u00edfica ou, por outras palavras, pode cumprir os requisitos do conhecimento cient\u00edfico, torna-se uma quest\u00e3o central. Na verdade, a aplica\u00e7\u00e3o coerente da lei depende de um conhecimento sobre o significado das senten\u00e7as normativas que podem ser classificadas (pelo menos) como estruturadas, sistematicamente organizadas e tendencialmente objetivas.
