Theme and topics

Marine biodiversity is facing unprecedented pressures from climate change, overexploitation of marine resources, pollution, habitat degradation, and emerging industrial activities in the ocean. As marine ecosystems transcend national boundaries, their conservation and sustainable use require coordinated legal and institutional responses across multiple jurisdictional levels.

Recent developments, including the adoption of the BBNJ Agreement, the implementation of the marine-related targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and growing initiatives to expand marine protected areas and restore ocean ecosystems, reflect a significant evolution in marine biodiversity governance.

This International Conference seeks to explore how international law, regional frameworks, and domestic implementation mechanisms are addressing contemporary challenges in the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of marine biodiversity.

Abstracts may link to any of these topics. Particular (but not exclusive) attention will be given to the following topics:

O BiP Portugal 2026 invites researchers, policymakers and practitioners to explore how behavioural insights can help us better understand law in action.

Hosted by the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon on 8–9 October 2026, this international workshop on behavioural science, law and public policy is co-organised by LPL - Lisbon Public Law Research Centre, CIDEEFF — Research Centre for European, Economic, Financial and Tax Law and King’s College London.

The event welcomes contributions on behavioural legal theory, legal and regulatory design, compliance, judicial decision-making, digital governance, ethics, legitimacy and evidence-based policymaking.

The call for abstracts is open until 15 August 2026. We warmly invite researchers, policymakers and practitioners to submit proposals for presentations to be included in the event programme

Registration for the workshop is also open, with the early-bird registration deadline on 15 September 2026. Registration is required for those wishing to attend the event.

Join this international conversation on the future of law, regulation and public policy through the lens of behavioural science.

The work plan fits into the activities of the cluster "Lisbon Law of the Sea" cluster, coordinated at LPL by Dr Fernando Loureiro Bastos.

]]> ICJP – Instituto de Ciências Jurídico-Políticas opens an international selection tender for the hiring of one post-doctoral researcher,under an unfixed-term employment contract, to perform scientific research activities carried out within the framework of the project LIFE ECOFORCE – Environmental Crime Directive: Operational Framework for Optimised Response and Compliance Enforcement.

The successful candidate will join an international research team dedicated to the study and implementation of legal and institutional mechanisms for the prevention, monitoring and prosecution of environmental crime, contributing to the scientific development of the project and the achievement of its objectives.

The LIFE ECOFORCE project (Grant Agreement No. 101295126) is funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme and managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The activities currently funded under the project are expected to run until 31 August 2028, with the research duties associated with this position expected to last 24 months.

]]> The Instituto de Ciências Jurídico-Políticas (ICJP) is launching a call for applications for the recruitment of a Graduate Staff for editorial management and coordination at the Lisbon Public Law Research Centre (LPL), in particular the editorial coordination of LPL Editions, which includes the electronic journal of public law – e-Publica. The position, full-time and under a fixed-term contract of indefinite duration, will focus primarily on editorial management, text editing, and support for scientific publishing in digital format. The remuneration corresponds to the 1st pay grade in the “Técnico Superior” career, with the possibility of progression. The contract includes a six-month probationary period. The call is governed by the Labour Code and is open to candidates with a degree in Languages, Literatures, or related fields, with excellent command of Portuguese, English, and IT tools, and with preference given to those with previous experience in editing, XML-JATS markup, and familiarity with academic publishing
