Welcome to
Lisbon Environmental Law is a cluster within the Lisbon Public Law Research Centre dedicated to the study of environmental law. Its purpose is to develop cutting-edge and high-impact research in environmental law through the collaborative work of scholars from diversified legal fields (particularly international and EU law, constitutional law, and administrative law), as well as from other social sciences (e.g., economics and social psychology) and natural sciences.
We aim to contribute to overcoming complex societal challenges concerning environmental protection by providing answers to complex legal problems. Our work is rooted in monthly workshops, monthly research seminars, conferences, and lectures, connecting research and advanced training in environmental law at the University of Lisbon School of Law.
Other than discussing research methods in environmental law, our work is essentially, but not exclusively, focused on two projects:
A Legal Roadmap for Sustainability: This project aims to produce theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the various areas in which the law is called upon to intervene in the pursuit of environmental sustainability through the efficient use of natural resources. The following interconnected areas are assumed to be priorities: (i) the circular economy; and (ii) soil protection and regeneration.
CLO – Climate Litigation Observatory: This project aims to study and answer new and disruptive legal problems that have been unveiled through climate litigation. Climate change has global, long-distance, and long-term legally relevant impacts. Building on the analysis of climate litigation cases, we use legal theory, fundamental rights theory, and human rights and administrative law theory to provide answers to these new legal problems.
